Skear means 'rocky outcrop at sea, visible at low tide'.
 

There are numerous skears on the shores of Heysham and Morecambe, dark rocky ridges, remnants of glacial activity in the Ice Age. Scattered rounded boulder are of a variety of rocks. Skears have extensive mussel beds and are host to a wide variety of shore life.
